SYLLABUS

Course Description

MUSI 4133.  Capstone Course in Music. 1 Credit Hour 

The capstone experience is the culmination of undergraduate music study and provides students with an opportunity to make their personal statement of preparedness for a post-college life with music.  Projects may include a 50-minute solo recital, a lecture-recital, or an undergraduate thesis or research paper.  In conjunction with the student's advisor, study abroad and other formats may be acceptable.

Prerequisites:  Senior standing.  Music majors seeking education certification must take this course before the semester in which they are student teaching.

 

Required Text and Materials

There is no required textbook.  Materials will be assigned on an individual basis.

 

Knowledge Outcomes

Students will develop an understanding of:

(1)       the process of designing a senior level project at a level acceptable to the music faculty

(2)       synthesis as applied to the knowledge and skills gained from their undergraduate coursework

(3)       primary source material, such as composers’ publications on music

 

Skill Outcomes

Students will be able to:

(1)       demonstrate the ability to apply synthesized knowledge and skills to a large project

(2)       improve career preparation and to facilitate the transition from the academic to the professional world

(3)       produce a professional resume or curriculum vitae

(4)       give an appropriate professional presentation of their projects

 

Value Outcomes

Students will:

(1)       appreciate the demands of project management

(2)       understand the value of concept and skill synthesis

(3)       gain confidence in their future role as music professionals

(4)       produce a tangible product (e.g., performance, presentation, paper, etc.) that is meaningful to the discipline and that can be used in the students' professional portfolio

 

Course Requirements:

The project must include a means to communicate the results of the project effectively at a professional entry-level by a method appropriate to the discipline (means of presentation), such as:

  • performance

  • PowerPoint presentation

  • demonstration

  • lecture

  • paper or project defense

  • other means of presentation deemed appropriate by student and advisor, as approved by the department head

A requirement of this course will be for the student to produce a professional curriculum vitae or resume that can be updated and revised as his/her career advances.  This document will be presented to the faculty at the time of the project presentation, or in the case of a senior recital, at the recital hearing.

The student's advisor is responsible for the final project grade; however, the student's project and its presentation may be judged by the entire music faculty.

 

Grading

Grades will be determined as appropriate to the specific capstone project.

 

Attendance

The student and advisor will set up a meeting schedule at the beginning of the semester.  Failure to attend these meetings may affect the final capstone gradeAttendance is required.  A student's absences will not change any deadline or assignment requirements.

Academic Conduct
