*(Find the answer at the bottom of the web page)

Patsy Montana (1908-1996)

Her real name was Ruby Blevins

In 1935, she recorded "I Wanna Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart" listen

She was the first woman in country music to sell one million records

Patsy Montana paved the way for women in country music

Kitty Wells (1919-       )

(Ellen Muriel Deason)

The first female country artist to have a Number 1 hit on the country chart.

"It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels"  listen

She was known as "The Queen of Country Music"

Here's the story of Kitty Wells' first huge hit

Hank Thompson had recorded a song called "The Wild Side of Life"

Kitty Wells was asked if she would be interested in recording "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels" as a response to Thompson's song.

Her song expressed the sentiment that deceitful men are to blame for fallen women.

Kitty Wells had a very proper and old-fashioned appearance (gingham and ruffles) and at the time, it was not that acceptable for a woman to sing about these subjects.

The song was banned from The Grand Ole Opry and from some radio stations.  But, it was very popular and made Kitty Wells a star.

Then came Patsy.

Patsy did not fit the mold of a female country singer.  She didn't dress like a farm girl.

She wasn't quiet and modest and proper like Kitty Wells.

And she was overtly emotional.
