Hank Thompson had recorded a song called "The Wild Side of Life" Kitty Wells was asked if she would be interested in recording "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels" as a response to Thompson's song. Her song expressed the sentiment that deceitful men are to blame for fallen women. Kitty Wells had a very proper and old-fashioned appearance (gingham and ruffles) and at the time, it was not that acceptable for a woman to sing about these subjects. The song was banned from The Grand Ole Opry and from some radio stations. But, it was very popular and made Kitty Wells a star. |
